Over their lifetime, Dick DeVos and his wife Betsy have given charitable contributions of nearly $139 million. Quite a bit of that, $11.6 million, was donated in 2015 alone. Dick DeVos dad, Rich DeVos, is a co-founder of an MLM company known as Amway. In 2015, all of the DeVos gave charity donations of $105 million, which then put their family on the Forbes list of America’s Top Givers. The whole families lifetime giving has been found to be an astounding number of $1.33 billion!
Dick and Betsy DeVos put education as a top priority for their giving. They were found to have donated $3 million alone to education in 2015. They believe that where they spend their money reflects how important education is to them as a couple. They believe that the current education system just isn’t doing it’s job and some kids just weren’t able to get the education they needed based on their location. Even though there are a number of amazing teachers, it is still important to improve the system in hopes that all children can be reached, and that is the goal of Dick and Betsy.
In 1974, Dick DeVos began working with Amway. With the company, he had a variety of levels of responsibility in numerous departments throughout Amway. He got a promotion to Vice President in 1984 but then in 1989 he left the company completely to start his own business endeavors. Dick DeVos started The Windquest Group, which is a company that manufactures and markets closet organizers as well as storage organizers. A few years later, in 1991, Dick’s father appointed him the manager of a basketball franchise for the Orlando Magic. A couple of years later he ended up back at Amway as the president.
Amway was restructured in 2000, and the work was all overseen by Dick DeVos, who was still currently the Amway President. During this restructuring, Alticor Corporation was formed. This was an umbrella firm that was comprised of Amway, the Quixtar Corporation and another business known as the Access Business Group. This firm expanded to more than 50 different countries and territories. A couple of years after Alticor was formed, Dick DeVos retired as the president. He went back to dedicating all of his time to his first business, The Windquest Group.
Later on, Dick decided that he wanted to enter politics. In 2006, he ran for the governor of Michigan as a Republican candidate. He unfortunately lost that election to the Democratic nominee by a small 14 point margin. It was found that DeVos was the wealthiest man to ever run for governor of Michigan. He spent an astounding number of $40 million on his campaign, which unfortunately didn’t help him win.
