In 1909, Otto Kolschowsky started a retail butcher shop in Illinois, back then the city was booming as it was the center of industries and also the entry point of immigrants. Otto was also an immigrant and opened the shop majorly to serve his community. The shop thrived, and later Otto rebranded it to Otto & Sons after it became the supplier of meat in the town. Otto’s business has always been a success and survived through the first and second world wars.
In 1955, the company now Otto & Sons was chosen to supply meat to McDonalds hotels. This is the point that the company experienced a magical growth and transformation. The extension included the company building its first facility to supply McDonald’s purely. As McDonald experienced its rapid growth worldwide, so did Otto & Sons. Later the company rebranded to OSI Group in 1975 and expanded to various countries such as Brazil, Germany, Spain and Australia.
In 2000, the company started on acquisitions which helped it to expand to various countries including China. As a result of Acquisitions, the company has been able to venture into different food markets in their quest to meet the steady demand for protein foods. The aggressive acquisitions have helped the company to expand drastically and become the world’s fastest growing company.
Since 2014, Sheldon Lavin led OSI Group to enter a number of joint ventures; they began a joint venture in 2014 with Pickstock in U.K enabling OSI to expand beef distribution across Europe. Select Ready Food in Canada also joined hands with OSI Group and allowed the company to supply meat products in Canada.
Later on, OSI Group has acquired a number of companies from Tyson plant in Chicago, Dutch Baho Food, UK Flagship Europe and the Germany Hynek Schlachthof. All this has happened under the leadership of Sheldon Lavin. Sheldon Lavin critical thinking, strategic planning, and innovation have made OSI be what it is today. Currently, the company operates in over 17 countries, with more than 20,000 employees and with 65 production facilities.
